FOR DISCUSSION

1. Cyberpunk is a sub-genre about survival within a futuristic dystopia. However, the character of Van Curen believes Cybernetica to be a macrocosmic utopia that maximizes human potential. Which of these civilizations do you think it is? What would be your definitions for both?

2. What real life similarities of social control mirror the future world envisioned here?

3. Do you think technology will serve to further liberate or enslave us? Are we becoming more individualistic, or less?

4. Cybernetica may best be described as a quest novel. What do you think the characters are seeking?

5. The character of Lanik was based on the Unabomber's manifesto about technology having reduced our freedoms and made life unfulfilling. Do you think Lanik's plan to incrementally phase out sublimation and then all of modernity would have worked?

6. Why do you think Annalise chooses to cooperate at the end? Do you see her actions as justified?

7. Were you surprised by the ending and some of its revelations? If so, what did you think would happen?

8. Is there a moral to this story? If so, what would you say it is?
